Book excerpt: In 1944, a young girl was imprisoned. Sixty years later, her story changes another woman's life... The past and present collide in Tell Me Your Secret, the spellbinding novel from Deirdre Purcell. Perfect for fans of Maeve Binchy and Edna O'Brien. 'Achingly poignant, with warm, strong characters, it will no doubt become an instant bestseller and delight all Purcell fans. Once again, she has produced a great read, popular fiction with writing that matches a literary novel and includes some telling social observation. Vintage Deirdre Purcell' - Irish Independent An evocative and dramatic novel told in the voices of two narrators: Violet, who in 1944 is imprisoned in the tower of a rambling country house by her family; and Claudine, a modern-day property negotiator who becomes involved in handling the sale of the derelict Whitecliff in 2004. Violet's story is of young innocent love for a local lad taking an unfortunate twist, while Claudine is a thoroughly twenty-first-century character: daughter of a loving father with a less loving stepmother, she marries in haste after her father's death, and is at a turning point in her life when she starts to find out the true story of Violet. Is happiness a possibility for these women in their separate and very different worlds? What readers are saying about Tell Me Your Secret: 'A true hidden gem, a wonderful read' 'All the characters are beautifully drawn, and the multi-layered story unfolds slowly and deliciously, at times satisfyingly happily and at others poignantly sadly' 'One of the best books I have read...outstanding'

Loren Oakers, an attorney, is a man who, tyrannized by an abusive father, spent his early adulthood spiting that parent, to the point of bringing home a bride he knew his father would reject. The novel unfolds with a fateful Labor Day picnic, when Oakers twin boys are drowned. His wife, holding him responsible because he had been drinking, leaves him, taking their ten-year- old daughter with her. Oakers sinks into despair and is badly injured in a drunk-driving accident. While recovering, he tells stories to children in the childrens ward of the hospital, and is then asked by one of the parents, a radio-station owner, to broadcast childrens stories on the air. This starts Oakers on a promising new career, with a hit radio program, but when two badly decomposed corpses are found in the woods at Hakers Creek, identified as his wife, Peggy, and daughter, Beth, circumstantial evidence points directly to him. He is brought to trial for the double murders. Feeling guilty and remorseful, he is unable to present a defense because he was drunk out of his mind the night of their deaths. A frightening event occurs during his trial, and the trial itself takes a bizarre twist, but the story doesnt reach its true and surprising climax until many years later, when Oakers is serving his country during World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after her birth, Tillie Olsen’s writing is as relevant as when it first appeared; indeed, the clarity and passion of her vision and style have, if anything, become even more striking over time. Collected here for the first time are several of Olsen’s nonfiction pieces about the 1930s, early journalism pieces, and short fiction, including the four beautifully crafted, highly celebrated stories originally published as Tell Me a Riddle: “I Stand Here Ironing,” “Hey Sailor, What Ship?,” “O Yes,” and “Tell Me a Riddle.” Also included, for the first time since it appeared in the 1971 Best American Short Stories, is “Requa I.” In these stories, as in all of her work, Olsen set a new standard for the treatment of women and the poor and for the depiction of their lives and circumstances. In her hands, the hard truths about motherhood and marriage, domestic life, labor, and political conviction found expression in language of such poetic intensity and depth that its influence continues to be felt today. An introduction by Olsen’s granddaughter, the poet Rebekah Edwards, and a foreword by her daughter Laurie Olsen provide a personal and generational context for the author’s work.

Book excerpt: GramaTell Me A Story is a Folklore volume. My worldmy formative years between five and eight years old took place in a small Western Washington Town of mild climatemuch rain. My grandmother, mothers mother, 60 plus, lived with our family of five: Mom, Dad, myself, my sister (three years younger), my brother (five years younger). Mom was a housewife. My father worked in the local creamery. We lived in an old turn of the century (19th) house with a big, long wrap-around side porch on a large corner lot with an oak and fruit trees. Dad kept a large vegetable garden. Three cousins who lived near, a neighborhood girl, the grade-school just down the block, Sunday School and Church were my world (1937-1940). I believe it was a wholesome place and timerebuilding after the Depression. My grandmother liked to tell us about her early life in Western Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Grandma was orphaned at three when her mother died. Mary Elizabeth grew up living with one Aunt and Uncle after the other.
