Book excerpt: I can honestly say that I’ve never met a man quite like my fellow North Louisiana “cousin” - David Ware. Then again, and to be even more honest, I can say that I’ve never actually met David - not in person, anyway - only talked with him on the phone. I’ve been interviewing service veterans for a few newspapers for which I write. David’s name was given to me by Johnny Malone, an old family friend who said, “Give this guy and call. He’s from my hometown of Homer, Louisiana and he’s got some great stories about his time in Vietnam.” After our interview, David’s sent me his manuscript for “Breath of a Tigress.” My first reaction was that a first-time novelist could never write this well. And not only was it well-written; I literally couldn’t put it down. Without stealing the author’s thunder, “Breath” is a story of a high school student who, after graduation, enlists in the service and finds himself in combat in Vietnam – just like David Ware did. The lead character is named Tom Wade. But make no mistake about it, with all due respect to the muse and common use of literary license, Tom Wade and David Ware are one and the same. And the characters in his book are all loosely based on people he knew growing up or fought with in Vietnam. I’ll leave it to David Ware to tell you the rest.

Book excerpt: After years of self-destructive behavior and hard luck, former publicist James J.R. Cronyn finds love with the talented and graceful Kate Winfield. Her support and his newfound faith in God give him the strength to reunite with his estranged daughter, Elizabeth, and his son, Bobby, the owner and CEO of a successful computer company. As J.R. builds bonds with his children, things are finally looking up in his life. When Bobby tells J.R. that God has asked him to give a percentage of his money away, J.R. knows exactly what Bobby should do. He convinces Bobby to buy a large quantity of a particular drug that cures women and babies who are stricken with the HIV/AIDS virus. Bobby consents and agrees to join his father on a humanitarian mission to South Africa. Father and son journey through the startling, yet beautiful landscape of South Africa with two fully equipped mobile clinics and two highly trained and experienced medical teams. Together, they deliver medical aid to hundreds, even thousands, of women and children. Often, when J.R. and Kaila, an extraordinary native woman, visit neighboring villages in search of women and babies in need of HIV/AIDS testing, they are confronted by angry young males who - because they refuse to accept the truth about the dreaded disease - curse and threaten them with physical harm. On his journey, J.R. meets Natasha, a beautiful and talented orphan, whom he wants to adopt, but they all face great danger when she is kidnapped and held ransom for $1 million. J.R. never dreamed he and his son would venture down such a hazardous path, but he will do whatever it takes to save Bobby and Natasha, even if it costs him his own life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scholarly exploration of Elmore Leonard—provides original essays and fresh insights on the author’s works and influence Labelled as “the closest thing America has to a national novelist,” Elmore Leonard’s clean and direct writing, engaging bad guys, and deadpan humor resonate with readers around the nation and throughout the world. Popular films based on his books continue to introduce new audiences to Leonard’s unique way of engaging with complex themes of American culture and pop-culture history. Yet surprisingly, academic treatments of his writing are almost nonexistent. Critical Essays on Elmore Leonard is an original anthology that covers the topics, themes, literary and narrative style, and enduring influences of one of the finest crime writers in the history of the genre. This unique collection of essays explores the ways in which Leonard’s work reflects America’s dynamic, ever-changing culture. Divided into two parts, the book first examines major themes and topics in Leonard’s works, followed by detailed case studies of five individual works including Get Shorty and Out of Sight. Essays discuss topics such as Leonard’s skill at conveying sense of place, his use of dress and appearance in his crime fiction, the influence of romantic comedies and westerns on his writing, and the concepts of moral luck, determinism, and existentialism found in his novels. Unique and thoroughly original, this book: Covers Leonard’s entire career, including his early Western novels and his work in visual media Illustrates Leonard’s genius at handling free indirect discourse Discusses the author’s influence, legacy, and contemporary relevance in various contexts Explores Leonard’s success at making himself “invisible” in his own writing Includes an insightful introduction from the book’s editor Critical Essays on Elmore Leonard is an ideal resource for academics and students in the field of genre studies, especially crime fiction, and general readers with interest in the subject.
