Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has read Patricia St. John's books already knows how her stories come alive, and this account of her own life is no exception. Her powers of description make the story leap from the page and the reader is transported to far off places and times; and the people and the things she describes can almost be touched, smelled and seen.Patricia was not just a gifted story-teller, though; she was also a deeply committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose spiritual journey began when she was only six years old. 'My name is Patricia, ' she prayed, 'and if You are really calling me I want to come and be Yours. ' Out of that small beginning there issued a river of life and light and blessing that went on increasing right up to the end of her life. Although she always thought of herself as 'an ordinary sort of girl' , her life was extraordinary because of her supreme love for Jesus Christ. The life portrayed here is not that of the self-conscious saint, concerned only with her own saintliness. On the contrary these pages offer us an inside view of someone utterly human, prone to mistakes and failures like the rest of us, yet suffused with the love of God and a contagious joy and peace that was like the bubbling up of a perpetual fountain.

If you want to find out if God could use you, join with Lorene Kimura to see how he used even the most unsuspecting women. The secret is not in the knowledge you have but being ready every day for the special time for when God calls your name. Describing herself as the "chosen child," Lorene never comprehended the entire meaning of that until much later in life, when God called her and she was ready to listen. Come on a journey, as you discover a fresh approach to a life for God, conquering the attitudes that would hold you back. God doesn't look at your mistakes, lifestyle, or commitments, but by your willingness to say, "Here I am, God. Use me." Jam-packed with storytelling and Bible teaching, One Ordinary Woman, One Extraordinary God will open your eyes to the many ways God can use you where you are, if only you will let him, illustrating the similarities of biblical and contemporary women. God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing. (Ephesians 2:10, NCV)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare nineteenth-century journal of an everyday woman richly infused with the minutiae of antebellum daily life and work. In 1820, Phebe Orvis began a journal that she faithfully kept for a decade. Richly detailed, her diary captures not only the everyday life of an ordinary woman in early nineteenth-century Vermont and New York, but also the unusual happenings of her family, neighborhood, and beyond. The journal entries trace Orvis’s transition from single life to marriage and motherhood, including her time at the Middlebury Female Seminary and her observations about the changing social and economic environment of the period. A Quaker, Orvis also recorded the details of the waxing passion of the Second Great Awakening in the people around her, as well as the conflict the fervor caused within her own family. In the first section of the book, Susan M. Ouellette includes a series of essays that illuminate Orvis’s diary entries and broaden the social landscape she inhabited. These essays focus on Orvis and, more importantly, the experience of ordinary people as they navigated the new nation, the new century, and the emerging American society and culture. The second section is a transcript of the original journal. This combination of analytical essays and primary source material offers readers a unique perspective of domestic life in northern New England as well as upstate New York in the early nineteenth century. Susan M. Ouellette is Professor of History and American Studies at Saint Michael’s College and the author of US Textile Production in Historical Perspective: A Case Study from Massachusetts.

Book excerpt: Sitting on the couch in the hospice house and literally watching as her best friend lay dying, Stefanie Cabaniss knew in those agonizing moments that the story must be told. As with the Scriptural account of Noah, Abraham and Moses, this recollection conveys a realistic version of that manner of ‘crazy’ faith. Dying to be Healed is not a story set in a backdrop of ages past. It is a contemporary, true, bittersweet and altogether real-life narrative of the final months of earthly existence of Stefanie’s best friend, Monica. Monica battled the ravages of stage-four Melanoma but came to strongly and immovably believe that she had been miraculously healed by the power of the Great Physician. This is a story of that unshakeable faith in the midst of rampant physical contradiction. Dying to Be Healed is also homage to Monica who gave to those around her a reason for hope, and for an abiding appreciation of the abundant blessings of the Lord. If life at times overwhelms you, Dying to Be Healed will help you discover what faith in God will accomplish. From reliving the account of Monica’s relationship with the Lord, you will: • Learn of sustaining and abiding faith. • Witness a convincing demonstration of God’s power and peace! • Find resolve to have a Great Day every day regardless of circumstances! Book excerpt: Discover the God-inspired difference only you can make in the world . . . using the key you never knew you had. Tim Tebow credits his mom with being the key to his success--but Pam never expected that she would be known on a national stage. For most of her life, she was serving quietly and faithfully as a wife and a mom--choosing life for her child in the face of medical risks, answering the Lord's call to mission work in the Philippines, and homeschooling before anyone knew what the word meant. But all along the way, her experiences--and her consistent, everyday choices to follow the Lord and to serve wherever He placed her--were creating unexpected ripples of influence throughout her family, her community, and her world. And they would end up extending far beyond anything she ever imagined. Pam believes that every one of us can be influential--and that deep within a woman's heart is the desire to use her influence for good. In Ripple Effects, Pam uncovers and explores the miraculous motivating power of influence we can have on this generation and the next, no matter where we are planted in life. Whether we are in the midst of endless diaper changes, climbing up the corporate ladder, or simply doing our best to live, love, and serve well each day, Pam will encourage us to maximize our God-given opportunities for influence--and watch how far the ripples will spread.

Book excerpt: What impossibly big dream or impossibly big failure is God calling you to take a journey circling around the promise and to fail better? Sharing inspiring human experiences from her own journey to fail better in prison, Anmy Tran will help you uncover your heart’s deepest desires and God-given promises and unbridle them through the kind of audacious communication that God delights to give you the desire of your heart. Hidden in ancient biblical stories and scriptures from the Old and New Testaments, the mysteries of promises revealed in To Fail Better are as raw as a reality show because they are the omens of the present; the scriptures revealed the secret is here in the present. If attention is paid to the present, it can be improved upon. And if the present is improved, what comes later will also be better. The revelations are so specific that you can forget about the future and walk each day in the scriptures, confident that God’s love always prevails and his promises to his children are always fulfilled—it’s real. Written in an absorbing narrative style, To Fail Better opens with the appearance of a woman burdened with unexpected storm. Through it are a series of messages she has received in the form of travel photography through a pen. Each travel unveils a failure and a prophetic mystery concerning failing better that will change the way one sees living forever. “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure” (Paulo Coelho).

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mary offers an interdisciplinary guide to Marian Studies, including chapters on textual, literary, and media analysis; theology; Church history; art history; studies on devotion in a variety of forms; cultural history; folk tradition; gender analysis; apparitions and apocalypticism. Featuring contributions from a distinguished group of international scholars, the Handbook looks at both Eastern and Western perspectives and attempts to correct imbalance in previous books on Mary towards the West. The volume also considers Mary in Islam and pilgrimages shared by Christian, Muslim, and Jewish adherents. While Mary can be a source of theological disagreement, this authoritative collection shows Mary's rich potential for inter-faith and inter-denominational dialogue and shared experience. It covers a diverse number of topics that show how Mary and Mariology are articulated within ecclesiastical contexts but also on their margins in popular devotion. Newly-commissioned essays describe some of the central ideas of Christian Marian thought, while also challenging popularly-held notions. This invaluable reference for students and scholars illustrates the current state of play in Marian Studies as it is done across the world.
